Modeler Mike Gambardella

Where are you from and what’s your educational background?

Connecticut, USA. And I remember having to buy VHS tapes of tutorials for CGI stuff.

The wheelbot in progressWhat do you do on Pure?

Modeler/resident scapegoat.  Taking one for the team.

What drew you to working on Pure?

I’m working on Pure due to Eric and Chris blackmailing me.

What excites you most about the project?

Seeing things I create be handed over to other departments and watching those wizards do cool things with them.

What has the experience of working with a virtual team been like?

Absolutely love it because with my current situation, full time job/wife/kids, it’s my chance to work with other creative people and learn and share knowledge.  It’s what keeps me coming back.

What do you hope to gain from working on Pure?

The contacts and friends and chance to work on more projects together.

The moped

What’s going to surprise people about this film?

The amount of detail that is being put into the show.

What’s your favorite animated film?

Most likely a toss up between the first Shrek and The Incredibles.  Shrek because it was the first animated movie to completely take the piss, and The Incredibles because of the character work and acting.  Growing up, I was a huge fan of the Transformers cartoons from the 80’s….yes I’m that old.

What about your guilty pleasure film?

Can’t really call this a guilty pleasure movie, but I’m guilty of watching them all the time…I would have to mention every single Appendices from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.  Whenever I need motivation, I fire those appendices up while working or to crash on the couch in order to subliminally motivate me when I wake up.  They are my security blanket.  I remember seeing little clips on what Weta Digital/Workshop was releasing on the net circa 2000 when i started tinkering with CG.  It’s what got me interested in CG in the first place.  I enjoy watching “making of” movies more than the actual movies.  I just love the whole process.  You can imagine my excitement when I took a 10 week animation class from CG Spectrum with Mark Pullyblank, who was a lead previz artist on The Hobbit movies.

Where can we find more of your work?

I have some random animation stuff at vimeo.com/gamby and been involved in some independent stuff too old to be worth mentioning.  Portfolio is coming in the near future.
